Ibbenbürener Kirmes: A Great Funfair in the Town Centre
2026-09-05
On the first weekend of September, Ibbenbüren is given over entirely to the Großkirmes – a funfair steeped in tradition that transforms the town centre into a colourful world of rides and stalls year after year. From Brochterbeck, Ibbenbüren is only a few kilometres away.
One of Germany's largest town-centre funfairs
With more than 200 rides, stalls and attractions across around 10,000 square metres, the Ibbenbüren Kirmes ranks among the largest town-centre funfairs in Germany and is considered the second-largest of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. Each year it draws around 300,000 visitors.
A tradition since the 18th century
The roots of the fair reach far back: it was first documented in 1742 and can be traced continuously from 1744. Over the centuries, what began as a market has grown into a folk festival known well beyond the town's boundaries.
