Full steam through Brochterbeck: the historic Teuto-Express
2023-09-25
Some sounds you never forget: the rhythmic beat of a steam locomotive, the long whistle, the hiss of steam. Our guests could experience exactly that — because the historic Teuto-Express steamed right past our holiday flat in Brochterbeck on the Teutoburg Forest Railway.
A rolling railway museum — since 1977
The Teuto-Express has run since 1977: when Germany's federal railway ended steam operation, historic locomotives found a new home on the private lines of the Teutoburg Forest Railway (TWE). Ever since, the "rolling railway museum" of the Eisenbahn-Tradition e.V. association from Lengerich has travelled the Ibbenbüren–Hövelhof line and other branch lines through the Tecklenburg, Münster and Osnabrück regions — including the Tecklenburg Northern Railway past Brochterbeck.
The fleet: 78 468, 50 3655 and the VT 03
At its heart are two of the association's own steam locos: the more than 100-year-old Prussian T 18 "78 468" (built 1923 by Henschel und Sohn, Kassel), 100 km/h in both directions, and the powerful rebuilt loco "50 3655" (class 50.35, originally built in 1942 as 50 2220), brought back to life by the association from a "loco ruin" in over 3,000 volunteer hours. Add the VT 03 of 1926 — Germany's oldest operational diesel railcar — and 14 passenger coaches restored to their authentic 1949–1956 condition: a real journey back in time on rails.
Railway romance right on the doorstep
The line winds through the Bocketal valley and the hills of the Teutoburg Forest — past the Dörenther Klippen rocks with the "Hockendes Weib". When the steam train passes Brochterbeck, time seems to pause: photographers, families and rail fans line the track. From our holiday flat you had a front-row seat. Since the line closures around Tecklenburg-Brochterbeck (from 2010), such moments have become especially precious.
Day trips with the Teuto-Express
In summer the Teuto-Express shuttles on some Sundays between Ibbenbüren Aasee and the spa town of Bad Laer — perfect for families with children; prams and bicycles travel free in the luggage van. Rewarding stops along the way include Tecklenburg with its castle ruins, open-air stage and the Haus Marck moated castle, the treetop walk and palace in Bad Iburg, and the spa gardens in Bad Laer. There is also the Steelworks Express to Georgsmarienhütte plus Advent and charter trips. Current dates and tickets are available directly from the association at eisenbahn-tradition.de.

Tip: combine a ride on the Teuto-Express with a hike on the Teutoschleife Tecklenburger Bergpfad — the perfect way to experience the Tecklenburg Land with all your senses.
