Discovering Tecklenburg: half-timbered gem & festival town in the Teutoburg Forest

Tecklenburg – the half-timbered gem of the Tecklenburger Land

High above the Münsterland stands Tecklenburg, the charming half-timbered town on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. Narrow lanes, crooked timber-framed houses, a mighty castle ruin and sweeping views make this officially recognised climatic spa one of the finest destinations in northern North Rhine-Westphalia – and it is practically on the doorstep: our holiday apartment in Brochterbeck belongs to the town of Tecklenburg itself.

The historic old town

The old town, visible from afar, is among the best preserved in all of Westphalia and its very silhouette is heritage-protected. Strolling across the market square you pass lovingly restored timber-framed houses, small shops, cafés and galleries – and gateways and stairways keep opening onto magnificent panoramas.

Tecklenburg Castle & the open-air theatre

The town’s landmark is Tecklenburg Castle, built around 1250 and once the seat of the powerful Counts of Tecklenburg. All that remains of the hilltop fortress is a romantic ruin with its striking archway and the Wierturm tower. In summer the castle becomes the stage of the Tecklenburg Open-Air Festival – since 2014 the town has officially carried the byname “The Festival Town”.

Climatic spa & hiking on the Hermannsweg

Tecklenburg has been a climatic spa since 1974 and a Kneipp spa since 1999. The famous Hermannsweg ridge trail runs right through it. Several Teutoschleifen premium circular walks start here – such as the legend-steeped Hexenpfad (Witches’ Trail) or the Tecklenburger Romantik. A few kilometres away the Dörenther Klippen cliffs beckon with the “Hockendes Weib” rock.

Culture, legends & history

Many tales surround Tecklenburg: Countess Anna of Tecklenburg-Schwerin and the physician Johann Weyer were among the first to speak out against the witch hunts. Well worth seeing are the Protestant town church with the counts’ tombs, the Otto Modersohn Museum and – at the foot of the hill – the moated manor Haus Marck, where pre-negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia took place in 1643.
